Luke 7:18-35

1. John the Baptist’s Question and Jesus’ Answer (18-23)

John the Baptist, hearing about Jesus’ works from prison, sends his disciples to ask, “Are you the one who is to come?” Instead of a direct answer, Jesus points to His miracles: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. He concludes, “Blessed is the one who does not stumble on account of me.”

Questions:

  1. Why did John question Jesus from prison, and have I ever struggled with doubts in my faith? (Luke 7:18-20)
  2. Why did Jesus choose to show His works instead of directly answering John’s question? (Luke 7:22-23)

2. Jesus Praises John the Baptist (24-30)

Jesus speaks to the crowd about John, asking if they expected a weak man or a wealthy ruler. Instead, He declares that John is a prophet, the messenger who prepares the way for the Messiah. Jesus says, “Among those born of women, none is greater than John,” yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than him.

Questions:
3) What does Jesus mean when He says the least in the kingdom of God is greater than John? (Luke 7:28)
4) What is my role in God’s plan? Am I preparing for His kingdom in my daily life? (Luke 7:29-30)

3. Jesus Rebukes This Generation (31-35)

Jesus compares the people of His generation to children in the marketplace who refuse to respond—whether to joyful music or mourning. John came fasting, and they said he had a demon. Jesus came eating and drinking, and they called Him a glutton and a friend of sinners. Yet, wisdom is proved right by her actions.

Questions:
5) Am I holding onto biases in my faith? Do I limit the way God works because of my expectations? (Luke 7:33-34)
6) How do I seek and follow God’s wisdom in my life? (Luke 7:35)

Prayer

Loving Father,
Like John the Baptist, I sometimes struggle with doubt. Yet, just as Jesus’ works revealed the truth, help me to see Your presence and guidance in my life.

Jesus praised John yet said the least in the kingdom of God is greater. Teach me humility and faithfulness so that I may serve You wholeheartedly and fulfill my role in Your kingdom.

This generation failed to recognize Your truth. Help me not to fall into the same mistake. Let me seek Your wisdom, trust in Your ways, and prioritize Your will over worldly opinions.

In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
