Luke 9:46-50

1. The Greatest (Luke 9:46-48)

The disciples argued among themselves about who was the greatest. Even though they were always with Jesus, their hearts were still influenced by worldly ambitions and desires. Knowing this, Jesus brought a little child beside Him and said: Whoever is least among you all is the greatest.

Jesus taught that true greatness in God’s kingdom is found in humility, not in status or achievements. Instead of seeking recognition and success by worldly standards, we must humble ourselves. When we do, God will lift us up (James 4:10).

  • What ambitions or worldly desires am I still holding on to, even as a believer?
  • Am I willing to humble myself so that God may be glorified through me?

2. Stopping Others in Jesus’ Name (Luke 9:49)

The apostle John saw someone casting out demons in Jesus’ name and stopped him because he was not part of their group. John later reported this to Jesus.

This attitude reflects a mindset of “We are the chosen ones, and others are not.” Even though the miracle was done in Jesus’ name, John and the other disciples refused to acknowledge it because it did not come from their group. This shows pride and exclusivity, which can hinder God’s work.

We must examine our hearts: Do we sometimes place our personal beliefs above God’s word? Are we limiting God’s work to only what happens within our own church or community?

  • Do I believe that my way of practicing faith is the only correct way?
  • Do I look down on or exclude those who are not part of my church or denomination?

3. Jesus’ Response: Do Not Stop Them (Luke 9:50)

Jesus corrected John by sayin “Whoever is not against you is for you.”

He emphasized that those who act in His name with true faith are brothers and sisters in Christ. God’s work is not confined to a particular group or organization but extends to all who believe in Him.

As believers, we should not focus on differences but rather unite in the common goal of spreading the Gospel. Jesus calls us to rejoice in the work of salvation, no matter who carries it out (Philippians 1:18).

  • Am I doing everything for the sake of salvation?
  • Do I judge or exclude others because they are not part of my group?

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for judging others based on my own standards. Help me to humble myself and seek only Your glory. Give me a heart that is willing to serve and unite with my brothers and sisters in Christ. May I live for the Gospel and do everything to expand Your kingdom. Amen.
