Luke 9:18-27: Who Do You Say I Am?

Luke 9:18-27

Hello, today we will be sharing the Word from Luke 9:18-27. Through this passage, we want to reflect on who Jesus really is and how we should follow Him, and share grace.

1. “Who Do the Crowds Say I Am?” (18-21)

Jesus asked His disciples what the world thought of Him. The disciples answered that some said John the Baptist, others Elijah, or one of the prophets. Then Jesus directly asked His disciples, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Peter boldly confessed, “God’s Messiah.”

This question is asked of us today as well.

  • Question: Who do you confess Jesus to be? Is He simply a respected teacher, or can you confess Him as “My Lord, my God” like Peter? Do you acknowledge that Jesus is the King of your life?

2. Taking Up Your Cross (22-25)

After Peter’s confession, Jesus foretold that He would suffer, be killed, and rise again on the third day. And He told His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Taking up your cross means not only enduring difficult things, but also forsaking your own desires and sinful nature and living in obedience to Jesus’ will.

  • Question: What is the cross you are bearing now? Do you believe that through that cross, you can know Jesus more deeply and share love with others?

3. Those Who Will See the Kingdom of God (26-27)

Jesus warned that whoever is ashamed of Him and His words will be ashamed on the last day. Conversely, He promised that those who faithfully follow the way of the cross will see the glory of the kingdom of God.

Believing in Jesus may sometimes mean enduring the world’s mockery and persecution. But when we overcome all of that and follow Jesus, we can enjoy eternal life and the rich blessings of the kingdom of God.

  • Question: Is believing in Jesus a source of pride or shame for you? What should you practice today to see and enjoy the kingdom of God more clearly?

Let Us Pray Together

Loving Lord, have mercy on us who still do not fully know You. Grant us bold faith like Peter, and help us to take up our crosses and follow You. Help us not to be discouraged even in suffering, and to live with hope in the kingdom of God. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
